Abstract: The Bunya Mountains - Russell Park Mountain Bike (MTB) Trails project, , is an exhilarating adventure experience that has been successfully delivered by the Western Downs Regional Council. The project, completed in mid-July 2023, encompasses approximately 18 km of International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Easy and Easy-Intermediate standard trails. The detailed design phase, initiated in July 2020, involved extensive civil and landscaping works to enhance trailhead locations at Russell Park Picnic Area, Fishers Lookout, Munro’s Camp, and the western trail terminus near Bunya Avenue (Dandabah). The trail network offers an array of terrain, including long flowing descents, climbs, sweeping corners, creek crossings, and fascinating rock and flora features, making it accessible to riders of all abilities. The project's main aim was to attract visitors to the Bunya Mountains and Western Downs region, fostering tourism and supporting the local economy while preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area. A significant aspect of the project was the incorporation of environmental and cultural considerations. To mitigate environmental impacts, extensive assessments and measures were implemented to protect the area and particularly the Bunya Pines from Phytophthora (dieback) infestation. Additionally, the project team worked closely with the local Traditional Owners - Western Wakka Wakka people, ensuring that the trail design and construction were sympathetic to their cultural heritage and connections to the Bunya Mountains. The construction phase faced unprecedented challenges, including an unexpected increase in rainfall and several flood events. These challenges required realignment of trail sections and construction of raised platforms adjacent to Phytophthora-infected sites to avoid further environmental impact. Despite these challenges, the construction quality remained exceptional, and the project's progress was continuously communicated with key stakeholders and the community. The trailheads, including the Russell Park Picnic Area, have been completed, featuring eco-friendly amenities, hygiene stations, seating, and signage showcasing the unique ecological and cultural significance of the Bunya Mountains region. Council's Environmental Impact Management Plan played a crucial role in preserving the landscape and biodiversity. The plan included cultural heritage monitoring, ensuring adherence to the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003. Cultural heritage monitors worked on site throughout the project, protecting the area's cultural and historical importance. In conclusion, the Bunya Mountains - Russell Park Mountain Bike Trails project has delivered an exciting adventure experience that respects and preserves the natural environment and rich cultural heritage. The exceptional collaboration between the project team, local community, and traditional owners has been instrumental in achieving this remarkable feat. The successful delivery of this project promises to attract visitors and boost tourism in the Western Downs region, leaving a lasting positive impact on the local economy and community.
