Abstract: Efficient and effective management of regional funds and infrastructure assets are a core expectation of city councils and represent a multimillion dollar undertaking. Through the use of the internet of things, artificial intelligence, image processing and the cloud, Moreton Bay Regional Council has successfully implemented a region scale, road network defect hunter. This sophisticated defect scanning system leverages existing waste collection activities to traverse the region recording prioritised defects for actioning by maintenance crews. This system has yielded a 3x increase in the volume of pothole defects identified and fixed. Customer complaints have also reduced by 28% due to the more programmed nature of the maintenance activities. Economies of scale through improved workforce planning and scheduling have been achieved whereby the average response time for potholes has reduced to only 5.07 days. Jackie will also be speaking today about the second phase of this project which is the scaling of this technology to other road defects and the footpath and stormwater network and she will also discuss the use and application of this data and its importance in understanding asset performance.
