| Abstract: | Road safety performance is conventionally measured by observing crashes over a period of time (typically five years) and hence treatment of crash locations is reactive. The Department of Transport and Main Roads initiated a research project to investigate ‘video analytics’ as an alternative tool to provide an efficient method of quantifying and locating near-misses with a view to using this information as a surrogate to proactively assess road safety performance at a site. Video analysis was undertaken at four signalised intersection sites with similar configurations. This presentation documents the undertaking of the trial from inception to delivery of results, includes learnings from the trial, and identifies possible future uses for this innovative proactive approach to road safety. |
